From chapter 1 we learned about five essential elements explaining what Public Relations was. One of them is that it is a research based social science. It means that it will target a certain percentage of a group of people.
Here in this advertising article explains who exactly is effected by prop 61. It says that those in that fall in the 88% will be affected by the drug price hike. PR people have to be certain about researching the right percentage because others will try to disprove your theory of the percentages.
In chapter 12 we discussed about crisis communication. It can happen anywhere, anytime, and to anyone. In PR it is explained that there are different crises than just Mother Nature.
In this article in the LA Times it shows Nigerian people being shot by soldiers for protesting. This protest had little recognition until they were being shot at by the soldiers. Maybe if it had gotten more recognition the UN could have prevented this shooting. Crisis in PR has certain stages it goes through when an event has happened.
From Chapter 14 we discussed cross cultural communications. Every country has their own beliefs that have been around for centuries. In the U.S. it is a melting pot of different religions and cultures that live here.
In this article is the fight for the pipeline in North Dakota. Here not only the Native Americans are fighting to keep the pipeline out but others from different backgrounds and religions come to their aid. These cross-cultural groups have come together against the big company wanting to put it in. PR has to take account that whatever a company is trying to do to a certain group of people that they have to do so without hurting any values or beliefs of that culture.
From chapter 8 we talked about the planning that goes into PR. In planning there has to be extensive research about a certain plan.
In this article is how to survive a holiday travel. It has different solutions for what a traveler may stubble upon and what they should do. With PR your research will help you gather the needed information to prove your solution even though it may not apply to all.
And from chapter 5 we learned about the power of public opinion. Everyone has their own ideas of different situations that come along.
In this article it talks about how much you should spend on gifts. It has a break down for every family member and friend with their spending limits. This is the publics opinion of how much to spend. Whatever you feel is righ you do not have to follow this break down.

Public Relations Jobs
In the US News article about a Public Relations Specialist, it talks about what Public Relations really is as a job. In our book in chapter 2, it says that there are six main areas that need to be the main focus in this career and they are:
- Real world exercises
- Exposure to guests lectures from practitioners
- Understanding of business cultures
- Social media experience
In this article is mentions that no matter if you work for the President of the US or you for a small organization you will always need to keep a positive publicity for whoever it is you’re working for. You will also always need to keep a close relationship with other journalist and social inquiries. This job also requires creating story pitches, press releases and question and answer interviews. If you’re looking into getting in this type of job these six main focuses are going to be a big part of the job.
Buzzfeeds fake ADs
When you enter Buzzfeeds website there are a lot of ads and pop up banners, it once you click on them they go to a completely different website. An example of one of their ads would one that says “How To Get Great Buns”. You would think it would be linked to a workout video of some sort, but really an ad for Carl’s Jr. This I believe is would be an example of manipulation, which we read about in chapter 5.
The article above explains how The Federal Government will be forgiving $108 billion in student debt in the upocoming years. This would be linked to controlled media in chapter nine because it is explaining how certain people will benefit from this decision.
This article is talking about how media has changed throughout the years and how there are many challenges to the way media is used now. In chapter 10 it talks about how new and powerful media is rapidly replacing the old media and how many people are questioning what the values of their education.
Social Media has grown into the main platforms for many businesses now. Helping market new products or sales. But it’s not just posting a picture and that’s it the message you’re trying to get across to your audience is important by the way you say it and how you’re saying it. In chapter 11 it explains the importance of knowing which media to use and how to use it to get your message across to your public.
Beverly Wiggins was first generation raised here in America. Her parents came over from the Phillipines for a better opportunity for their family. She was raised with manners and the best advice that her parents could give her was to always smile and be nice to everyone. She started working at sixteen years old in a family restaurant during the summer. Her shift hours began at 9 a.m. and ended at 9 p.m. She quit that job and was able to get a job at a city pool as a locker room attendant. Her parents believed that education was most important and working hard so with that she was able to graduate from ELAC in two years, transfer to Cal State LA and graduate two years later.
This month we were lucky to have Beverly Wiggins alumni of Elac come and be a guest speaker in our P.R class, and what we learn from here we will take with us for years to come we learn so much from her she share some great stories about her past her childhood her adult life and now into her retirement life she’s done so much in her life travel the United States and parts of the world has even been on TV on a game show called Hollywood squares.
The little things we won’t forget she did as a guest speaker was share some yummy animal cookies give us a 2017 calendar & had us write down our goals on color note cards
Words of wisdom
The words of wisdom by Beverly Wiggins given to us, will stay with us for years to come, and will help us in our journey into the P.R road ahead, starting with the words of wisdom given to her by her parents “always smile” and say “hi” to everyone. Beverly clearly used these words of wisdom in her road to success, another of her best advice is shaking hands with people, leave no stone unturned, always be two steps ahead, always try to look your best, always have a note pad on you and a 12 month calendar, add color to your notes and last but not least “don’t take time for granted”.
Thank you Beverly Wiggins for coming to share with us from MRS. Sanchez -Rico the P.R class at ELAC
